Agricultural Biotechnology And It's Critics

Food, Inc. : Mendel to Monsanto--The Promises and Perils of the Biotech Harvest
Peter Pringle (Author)

List Price:   $24.00

Hardcover: 356 pages

Publisher: Simon & Schuster; (June 10, 2003)

ISBN: 0743226119

I found this to be the best book on the agricultural biotechnology controversy that I’ve read.  Pringle is a journalist and the book covers all of the major events in the last few years (monarch butterflies being fed Bt corn pollen, Starlink in taco shells, etc.) in what I felt was a balanced way.  The critics of “Frankenfoods” won’t like this book; gung ho ag biotech advocates might not like it either.  (Yes, Monsanto was arrogant and yes it was stupid to pursue an approval for corn that would be OK as feed but not approved for human consumption and expect segregation to keep it out of the human food supply.)  JdK

I read this book right after the first, and I was disappointed in its treatment of the same events.  I found it to be more of a tract than a scholarly work.  But it is representative of the arguments of those who oppose GMOs.  JdK
