Building Student Safety Habits for the Workplaceby Mickey Sarquis (Editor), Et Al (Contributor), James Kaufman (Contributor)

List Price:   $58.00

Paperback:

Publisher: Terrific Science Pr; (August 2000)

ISBN: 1883822246

Developed by the partnership for the Advancement of Chemical Technology (PACT) with funding from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technical Education Initiative.

It is difficult to find a Safety manual that presents the subject matter in a fresh and practical manner.  This book is a must for any laboratory-technician training program.  It could be used either as the text for a designated safety course or as supplemental material for other laboratory courses.  It is a one of a kind textbook that is designed to teach the current views of prudent laboratory practices and the laws that govern laboratory safety.  It is intended as both a resource and activity book for chemistry and chemical technology students, although students in related disciplines will find the information essential.  The chapters contain basic information in an explanatory text and also include laboratory or classroom exercises to reinforce concepts.  Each chapter contains numerous references and sources of additional information including text as well as on-line resources.

by National Research Council, Natl Research Coun

List Price:   $89.95

Hardcover: 427 pages

Publisher: National Academy Press; (August 1995)

ISBN: 0309052297

Prudent Practices is the laboratory chemical safety reference.  It is the condensation of two previous safety volumes from the national Research Council Prudent Practices for Handling Hazardous Chemicals in the laboratory and Prudent Practices for Disposal of Chemical from Laboratories.  Even though other hazards have been identified since its writing, it recognizes and deals with numerous Chemical Hazards in an organized and straightforward manner.  The culture of Laboratory Safety is a most important concept for the modern lab and this reference helps to identify hazards, explain the hazardous nature and then describe practices to safely work with them.

Safety in Academic Chemistry Laboratories, Volumes I and II 7th ed., American Chemical Society, Washington, D.C., 2003.

This guide is available from the American Chemical Society's Office of Society Services by calling 800-227-5558 (or 202-872-6067) or emailing OSS@acs.org Single copies are free

The American Chemical Society put our some wonderful set of safety guides that are useful for teaching courses at almost every level.  Guides are written for teachers, supervisors from primary grades to laboratory workers as well as the general public.  These booklets can either be downloaded directly from the site or copies can be purchased in bulk to be used in the classroom.  Their premise is reflected in the quote: Doing things safely is not merely the right way to work – it is the only way!  The short two-volume booklet is intended for students who work with chemicals in chemistry laboratory courses and research laboratories.  It starts with a good discussion of the culture of safety and procedures to give practical information about chemical safety.
