Community College Bus tour visits Bluegrass Community and Technical College and BioOhio

The Community College Career tour with Dr. Jill Biden and U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis stopped at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) the other day.  

Biden and Solis are visiting succesful education programs in a five state region with as stop planned at BioOhio as well.  During the five state tour, they plan to spotlight innovative partnerships between industry and community colleges.  

During her BCTC visit, Dr. Jill Biden met biotechnology student Darah Johnson and Eric Ostertag (CEO, Transposagen Biopharmaceuticals).  Darah is currently an intern at Transposan and will be working there full-time in May after she completes her AAS in Biotechnology from BCTC.

BioOhio's grant-funded program in biomedical training is also on the schedule for a visit.  BioOhio's program, funded by the Department of Labor seeks to educate and place 660 workers in bioscience careers.  

BIOtechNOW reports that  both Dr. Biden and Secretary Solis understand the important role that community colleges play in building a flexibale workforce that can meet 21st-century demands in emerging technologies.  Dr. Biden was a community college instructor for 18 years and Secretary Solis began her public service career as a community college trustee.
