This is only a partial list of available opportunities for undergraduate summer internships or summer research positions. Check with local industries and research institutions for other possibilities for undergraduates.

There are many opportunities for faculty to obtain industry, technical, or research experience locally or through national venues. This section provides information about faculty development opportunities in biotechnology and has been organized as follows:
I. National opportunities - Located various places in the US or online, includes databases of programs
II. Regional opportunities - Limited to a specific US state/area
NOTE: Many program websites state that their programs are for K-12 teachers; however, these programs may also be open to teachers at other levels such as community/technical colleges. If a program is of interest to you, be sure to contact the program to determine if you are eligible to apply.

Also check the local and national biotechnology trade organization websites. Jim DeKloe, the Southwest Regional Bio-Link Director, developed his bio-manufacturing program at Solano Community College as a result of spending a sabbatical year at Genetech.

Our experience suggests that companies are often most open to faculty "job shadowing". Job shadowing provides an opportunity to see many aspects of a company and get a broad overview of its organization. Job shadowing usually does not provide any stipend from the company and does not usually provide many hands-on opportunities. Faculty members can arrange job shadowing or other kinds of industry experience by contacting local biotech industries directly. If a company offers student internships, it is highly probable that the faculty member in charge of the student interns can negotiate an arrangement to acquire the expertise he/she desires.
GRANTS AND OTHER FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES:
The NSF Guide to Programs is a compilation of funding for research and education in science, mathematics, and engineering. The NSF Guide to Programs is available electronically at
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/browse_all_funding.jsp. General descriptions of NSF programs, research areas, and eligibility information for proposal submissions are provided.
The journal Science and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) have partnered to bring the necessary career resources for scientists as well as effective recruiting solutions for employers. This includes a search engine for grants at
http://www.grantsnet.org/search/srch_specify.cfm.
Information includes updates for the year 2006. Please note: many of these programs will accept both 2-year college teachers as well as high school teachers to their programs.
