Descriptions: The Granite Technical Institute (GTI) is a unique high school campus dedicated to Career and Technical Education (CTE). Examples of programs being taught at the GTI are: 3D Design & Animation, Biotechnology & Biomanufacturing, Engineering and numerous health-care related subjects.

Biomanufacturing Summary: Biomanufacturing is a term used to describe a product-oriented industry based upon the fields of Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, many Engineering disciplines, Microbiology and Physics. One way to describe this industry is that it is Bioscience- related production and manufacturing. Some examples of Biomanufacturing products are: Aspirin, Band-Aids, Insulin, prosthetic limbs, Visine and Vitamins. Because of the strong health-care emphasis of this industry, it is governed by strict federal guidelines and regulations. The joint Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and Granite Technical Institute (GTI) Biomanufacturing Program has been structured to provide students with a rigorous and relevant education in the scientific, technical and regulatory standards central to this industry.

Responsibilities: Successful applicant will teach 10th, 11th and 12th grade students participating in the SLCC/GTI Biomanufacturing Program. This individual will work closely with and will be supported by SLCC staff to develop course content and teaching strategies. This individual will also work closely with current GTI Biotechnology and Engineering instructors and will be responsible for developing interdisciplinary applied science education practices. This person will be actively engaged in a program dedicated to providing students with the technical and problem-solving skills needed to transition successfully from the high school classroom to the challenging environments of the higher education and work worlds.

Major Responsibilities: Teaching high school Biomanufacturing courses
  • Collaborating in the development of Biomanufacturing course content and curricula
  • Developing and sustaining partnerships with other school districts and Biotechnology programs for the purposes of recruiting students, sharing best practices and cultivating multiple career paths and entry/exit points for students
  • Working with a student-internship coordinator to develop and encourage student internship opportunities
  • Collaborating in tracking student progress during and after participation in Biomanufacturing courses
  • Participating in on-site and external professional development opportunities

  • Qualifications: Required:
    Has both BA or BS and MS or PhD in science (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or related field) Is a licensed Utah State secondary educator
    or
    2. Committed to be licensed as a Utah State secondary educator
    3. Has taught Biology or Chemistry at the high school level or higher
    or
    3. Has extensive experience working in and training others in a Biomanufacturing setting
    4. Understands Biotechnology and Bioscience-related production & manufacturing
    or
    4. Able to quickly acquire familiarity with the Biomanufacturing industry in order to successfully develop and comfortably teach course curricula
    5. Excellent teaching/instruction skills
    6. Passion for making connections between the academic classroom and the broader world through applied science and hands-on learning activities
    7. Excellent written and oral communication skills
    8. Works well as part of a team
    9. Proficient with PC &/or Mac (i.e. Microsoft Office & basic AV skills)

    Preferred:
    10. Holds current teaching endorsement in Chemistry, Biology or Physics
    11. Familiar with quality systems and federal regulatory systems
    12. Experience and comfort working across departmental (e.g. R&D / Regulatory Affairs / Engineering / etc.) boundaries
    13. Experience with technical activities relevant to Biomanufacturing (e.g. microbiology, protein biochemistry, cell culture, packaging design, product QA/QC or validation, or other related/relevant skills)
    14. Substantial experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, natural products or related manufacturing industry
