Responsibilities: |
Overview:
The persons filling one of these positions will assist in all phases of the day-to-day activities of a progressive breeding program, supporting the research leader in the development of varieties and commercial products that meet strategic plans and goals related to a global seed business. Selected candidate will assist with a turfgrass breeding program including research plot preparation, planting, maintenance, and harvest; field and laboratory data collection, in collaboration with existing project personnel. Our research nursery is located near Connell, WA about 20 minutes from Pasco or 2 hours from Spokane.
What you will be doing and/or learn:
1.  Help regular crew with sprigging and nursery planting 2.  Work with breeders in collecting data on plant selections. Data will include rating maturity, color, density, leaf texture and yield. 3.  Bar-coding of plant selections.
4.  Moving polycrosses (plant selections that are dug out of the ground and transplanted to an isolation block before pollination and then harvested).
5.  Help with spot spraying in isolation blocks and off-type removal.
6.  Help with harvesting of individual selections and breeder blocks.
7.  Help with threshing individual selections.
8.  Help with weighing and packaging seed for turf trials.
9.  Assist with the collection of research data for turf.
10. Learn how a corporate supported research department operates.
11. Assist in the setup of field trials for product based research and marketing.
12. Assist with the application of chemicals for turf maintenance and research.
13. Learn the use of general turf maintenance equipment.
14. Learn golf course management techniques as applied to research.
15. Possibility of arranging college credit.

Qualifications: |
Skill/Experience Requirements:
*Â 2-3 years of course work toward a BS or MS degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Turf Science, Botany or Plant Breeding or Genetics.
1. General background in agriculture or science with an interest in learning how a plant breeding program is run.
2. Able to work long hours in a field environment. Some travel will be required.
3. Supervisory experience a plus.
4. Candidates will need to be able to lift plants weighing up to 50 lbs.
5. Candidates will be preferred to live in either Connell or the Tri-cities area.
