This exercise uses Biology Workbench, a sequence analysis program found on the web, to look at the difference in normal and sickle-cell hemoglobin. The Center for Engineering Plants for Resistance Against Pathogens at UC Davis is a NSF funded biotechnology education program that serves 45 high school teachers in the greater Sacramento area. This site has many resources available on line such as a plant transformation photo tour, all of our secondary level biotechnology laboratory protocols, and educational software available for free download. The Center focuses on education programs for science teachers, and those groups currently underrepresented in the plant sciences.

    A significant proportion of the cornstarch derived from the wet milled process used for food goes into the fermentation of beer. To be useful to the breweries, it first has to be converted into dextrose or d-glucose. This is an example of down-stream processing; a raw material is isolated and used as a starting material in another process.
