Program description:
Shoreline Community College has been offering degrees in biotechnology for the past twenty years and has been a Bio-Link program and regional center since 2001.
The Biotechnology Laboratory Specialist Program prepares students to work in a wide variety of laboratory settings. The curriculum is broad, offering a foundation in a number of math and science disciplines including algebra, statistics, chemistry, biology, microbiology and computer science. Through classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory learning experiences, you will gain a working knowledge of molecular biology, recombinant DNA, immunology, protein purification and tissue culture. Shoreline offers a 2 year AAAS degree for students new to science and a 1-year certificate program for students with a Bachelor's or advanced degree looking to increase their laboratory skills.
Many of the courses offered at Shoreline Community College are accepted as transfer credits for science majors at other institutions including Western Washington University and the University of Washington, in programs such as Microbiology and Cell and Molecular Biology.
High school partners: Puget Sound Biotechnology Advisory Committee
Shoreline Community College works with several of the local high school programs through its involvement with the Puget Sound Biotechnology Advisory Committee. The committee includes many high school faculty who teach biotechnology courses, and science educators from local non-profit institutions, local industry, and the University of Washington.
